outrage

I'm paraphrasing here, because I heard it on 90.9 WBUR, but it went something like

"The thing about South Carolinian voters, is that they're fickle; they won't be fooled. The deal with Mitt Romney's Mormon faith - his Mormonism, isn't that he's of a different branch of Christianity. As a Christian South Carolinian, I can say for all of us that we don't give a hoot about what kind of Christian the President of the United States is, we care about their relationship with Jesus Christ. For us, thats the most important thing."

Well, my Southern Baptist friends. Well, indeed. Why do you apply theological constraints on a secular position? Being POTUS isn't about, I dunno, communing with God. Its not about finding some inner strength or spirit you didn't know existed.

If you want to see how ridiculous this line of thought is, replace any job title in the bolded letters and see where it gets you.

I care about the President of the United States being a Christian, because I am afraid that not being so will impact their job performance. Without a Christian leading the way, I think that the Abrahamic God will forsake this country. Worst case scenario, the apocalypse could happen. Realistically though, having  a non-Christian could result in a net loss of jobs and money overseas. Additionally, the economy, without this proper Christian moral guidance, will plummet faster than you can say 'mayday'.

I care about my mechanic being a Christian, because I am afraid that if my mechanic is a devil-worshipping Satanist (God forbid they are Muslim), he will change my oil wrong, let the air out of my tires (intentionally?), and set my car on fire. Also, as this fictional mechanic isn't a Christian, they will probably overcharge me for these services too.

I give a damn about my plumber being a Christian, because changing a house's piping really relies on a good relationship with Jesus Christ. Rather than relying on a professional with technical expertise who has attended a vocational or trade school, or at least someone with a basic fundamental understanding of plumbing, I think its far more important that my plumber has read the bible and goes to Church on the reg.

Look, the bottom line is that being Christian doesn't have any logical implications as to a person's moral fiber. Plenty of Christians have turned out to be horrible and nasty people. Even among the Presidential nominees, you can find such gems as Newt Gingrich, who has abandoned multiple wives for younger mistresses, all while espousing the 'Christian' value of the importance of family. Even this is nonsense. This claim to 'family values', from my own non-Christian standpoint, is so silly. My family hasn't set foot in a Church in over a year, and last I checked we're all doing fine*.

*Except my sister's kitten does appear to have a cold. Better start praying; if little-Teddy-bear (as we call him) does get better, praise the Lord. If he dies; Eh! God works in mysterious ways. Rest in Peace, my dear sweet kitten. What we can all be sure about, however, is that there is no use taking him to the veternarian. I heard that guy is Hindu.
